from:

The answer to what is yoga can easily be obtained if one understands that it is a mental as well as physical system for health betterment that has been practiced from the ancient times in far off India, where it originated and which is now fast catching on in the rest of the world including the United States. The reason why yoga is becoming so popular is because it has been endorsed by doctors who advise their patients about the value and benefits of yoga, which is also a subject for much study by scientists.

Helps Calm And Relax The Mind And Body

With so much interest being shown by both medical doctors as well as scientists as to what is yoga it is hardly surprising that there is much information on the subject readily available to anyone interested in the topic. You can easily find out what is yoga and what yoga can do for you. The answer to the latter is that it helps in calming and relaxing anyone that practices yoga, and not only for the body, but also for the mind, and it can also help in lifting your spirits.

If you are still wondering as to what is yoga, you can think of it as being a wonderful discipline that makes a person feel well as well as stay well. In addition, you will also be taught when you ask what is yoga that there are six branches to it that can suit different personalities and these six branches include Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Tantra Yoga and Hatha Yoga.

The first named or Raja Yoga or ‘Royal' yoga is that branch of yoga that is primarily concerned with the practice of meditation and is ideal if you wish to introspect as well as contemplate. The next branch of yoga is known as Karma Yoga or the yoga of selfless service, and since reincarnation is fundamental to the thinking of yogis, or those that practice yoga, this form of yoga is concerned with freeing oneself from carrying one's bad deeds into the next life and thus ensure that one does not become an inferior being in the reincarnated being.

You may also be wondering as to what is Bhakti Yoga, and the answer is that it is the path that involves devoting one to become aware of divine being and also realize that everything surrounding one is divine. and all actions as well as thoughts should be bent to achieve a spiritual awakening. And, in a similar vein you will come to realize what is Jnana Yoga, which is meant for intellectuals so that they can achieve liberation through the study of the scriptures dealing with yoga. And, Tantra yoga, though often misunderstood when asking what is yoga, is meant for those who wish for ritualistic as well as sexually oriented consecration.

Finally, Hatha Yoga is that branch of yoga dealing with movement and is a most popular form of yoga involving many different physical postures while simultaneously controlling one's breath through concentration and also being conscious of one's own breath. This form of yoga is well suited for anyone that is of a physical nature and whose temperament is also physically inclined.

Thus, an understanding of what is yoga will necessarily lead one to each of these six branches and after gaining adequate knowledge you will have answered your own question adequately.
